Welcome!

Wag N Train Terrier Rescue's mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, train, and re-home terriers, dachshunds, and other small breeds in need of permanent, loving homes. We are a foster-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit staffed entirely by volunteers, dedicated to ensuring every dog receives compassion, safety, veterinary care, and the chance for a better life. We pride ourselves on our professional approach to dog rescue – we are members in good standing in the Nebraska Rescue Council and the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. All of our community support organizations can be viewed here.

Our organization has no formal facility; all of our dogs live with foster families until they are ready for adoption or lifelong sanctuary care. Our foster homes provide the love, comfort, security, and individualized attention each dog deserves.

What makes our rescue exceptional? Our Sanctuary Sweethearts – dogs who stay in rescue for the remainder of their lives because of advanced age or serious health issues. Through the kindness and generosity of our volunteers and thanks to private donations, Wag N Train provides all medications, supplements, dog food, and veterinary care for these very special dogs so they can live out their lives in comfort and with dignity.

Latest News: Roux Needs Our Help

Roux the dachshund

Roux is a timid 5-year-old dachshund rescued from a commercial breeder. After joining Wag N Train, she received routine vetting and began adjusting to life in a loving foster home. This beautiful little girl was finally on her way to a bright future outside of the commercial breeding industry.

Suddenly, Roux became very ill. She started vomiting and refused to eat. A trip to the vet revealed that Roux had developed double abdominal hernias. After a day of conservative treatment with no improvement, emergency surgery was scheduled – her only chance to survive.

The surgery was difficult but successful. Roux stayed at the vet over the weekend on glucose and injectable medications, then transitioned to oral meds and slowly reintroduced solid food. She is now back with her foster family and on strict crate rest for 3–4 weeks while she heals. Her devoted fosters are nursing her back to health.

We are incredibly grateful to our veterinary team for giving Roux a second chance at life. However, her surgery and hospital stay cost over $2,000, and we need help covering this unexpected bill. We know budgets are tight right now, but any amount helps.

Kirk Douglas

Kirk Douglas spent nine years living in an unheated shed with his son, Michael. He had no name, no veterinary care, and almost no human contact. When he came into our program, he finally learned what every dog should know – soft blankets, gentle hands, good food, and a family who adored him.

Shortly after rescue, Kirk was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma. His time with us was far shorter than we hoped, but during that time he was cherished, comfortable, and safe. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by love and dignity – no longer a forgotten shed dog, but a beloved Sanctuary Sweetheart.

Kirk’s story reminds us why our mission is so important: senior dogs, medically fragile dogs, and dogs from neglectful situations deserve compassion and the chance to experience love, even if only for a short time. Donations to Wag N Train help us provide hospice care, medications, quality food, and supportive foster homes for dogs like Kirk.
