Note: Due to his past and how he reacts to “strangers,” Michael must stay in the Omaha area. His adopter will need to meet him several times prior to adoption so he can be introduced slowly and begin building trust. The extra effort will absolutely be worth it!
Michael Douglas endured a heartbreaking beginning — five years living in a dark shed with almost no human interaction. He was filthy and matted, full of fleas, suffering from infections and parasites, walking on the sides of his overgrown nails, and surviving on poor-quality food. He wasn’t even given a name. When he and his “dad,” Kirk Douglas, were surrendered from a breeder, his life finally began to change.
Today, Michael is somehow one of the happiest little dogs you'll ever meet. His tail never stops wagging. He is a true “velcro dog” who wants to be with you everywhere — helping with laundry, yard work, watching TV, or just soaking up lap time and belly rubs. He bonds deeply and will thrive in a home where someone is around more often than not.
Michael does wonderfully with other small dogs, especially playful and confident ones who can help him continue to learn and build independence. He is submissive and listens well to corrections. Because he previously didn’t have consistent access to food, he may try to steal from others, so feeding him in his kennel works well.
He enjoys being outside but only if you are outside with him. He becomes nervous alone, even if other dogs are present. A securely fenced yard is required as he has not yet learned reliable leash walking or pottying on a leash. He will potty outside if you remain with him and give him time. He also wears a belly band well.
Michael is a barker — five years in a shed gave him plenty of time to practice. He has a deep, loud bark and will alert you to anything he finds concerning (including squirrels, plastic bags, and neighbor kids on scooters). He is not appropriate for apartment living.
Fear, Trust & Safety: While Michael is incredibly affectionate with his foster and has never once shown aggression toward her — even during baths, ear care, or nail trims — he is very nervous around unfamiliar people. When frightened, he chooses flight whenever possible, but if cornered or feeling trapped, he may choose fight and has nipped when scared. Because of this:
No children
Must live in the Omaha area
Requires multiple slow introductions before adoption
Adopter must be patient, calm, and dog-savvy
Must have a confident small dog companion
Once Michael trusts you, he becomes a silly, affectionate, loyal little shadow. Building that trust takes time, but the reward is a lifetime of snuggles, devotion, and joy.
If you can offer patience, love, and a safe home that helps Michael forget his first 5 years in that shed, we encourage you to apply to adopt him.

Wag N' Train Terrier Rescue adopts nationally (the contiguous 48 states) if we can locate a volunteer willing to assist with a home visit. Approved adopters need to be prepared to travel to the Omaha area; we do not ship our foster dogs and we do not arrange transports.
Unless otherwise indicated, our foster dogs require a securely fenced yard. Invisible/underground fencing does not classify as "secure."
Our volunteers process applications that meet the MINIMUM criteria for a specific foster dog. If you do not meet the baseline requirements, we encourage you to monitor our Facebook page and website for a foster dog who is a great fit for your lifestyle!
Please refer to the Additional Details section for specific requirements for this dog. We receive a high volume of applications and can only process those that meet the criteria.
